chapter 8 intro

In order to control light and color, you must have a basic understanding of how they both behave. In this chapter you'll learn the limitations that all digital cameras face when trying to capture the very light and color that human eyes see. You'll also learn the unique way that computer monitors interpret the information that the camera captures. Finally, you'll see the challenges that your printer faces when trying to reproduce the colors that the monitor displayed for you to see.

Knowing how light and color behave (and how the camera perceives those behavioral patterns) is absolutely imperative if you are to achieve correct color with digital images. Don't let the vastness of that statement scare you. Once you see a couple of basic issues, you’ll be amazed at how quickly you can gain (and keep) control over the color world, and how easy it is to manage the process.

What you learn from this brief tutorial on light and color will directly influence how and why you capture color with your camera, why the color you see on your monitor is so critical to your success, and why the colors coming out of your printer may not look like the colors you saw on your monitor.

There are thousands of amazing books on the market that teach you HOW to use photo-editing software... this book gives you the WHEN and WHY you should edit your images... and then it shows you how.

This chapter will teach you about the mechanics of light as it is perceived both by your eyes and by digital cameras.

As you understand the correlation between the camera and the eye, you will understand how to control both light and color all the way from the camera to printer. It is absolutely necessary to understand how digital cameras and printers perceive and transfer this color language
